Corn Exchange, Market Place, Warwick

In 1849 the council was asked to provide a proper corn exchange site. It started to be discussed in council meetings in 1851 and by 1855 favoured the idea of building a covered corn exchange.[1]

That year the Warwick Corn Exchange Company was registered and purchased the Castle Hotel (a 'messuage with the stables'). It subsequently demolished the buildings and a contract was drawn with William Gascoyne of Leamington for the erection of a corn exchange on the site,[2] designed by James Murray of Coventry.[3] It opened the following year and was then further enlarged by the same builder, at a cost of 1210.[4]

Plays were sometimes staged at the Corn Exchange and in October 1910 a license was granted to make use of it as a cinema, a month after a similar license was granted to the Albert Hall in Edward Street.[5]

Present Day

The Corn Exchange has since been demolished and replaced with a building that was until the 30th December 2008 a Woolworths[6]
